A UN envoy and head of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) arrived in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa Monday to help calm down escalated political tension that triggered deadly clashes in the capital, state news agency Saba reported.

"UN envoy to Yemen Jamal bin Omar and the delegation accompanying him arrived in the capital on an official visit to inspect the latest developments on the Yemeni political arena," Saba said.

"GCC chief Abdullatif al-Zayani also arrived Monday in Sanaa on an official visit," Saba added.

A government official told Xinhua that al-Zayani and bin Omar will hold consultative talks with Yemeni rival forces on the latest deadly clashes in the flashpoint Sanaa and other major provinces.
