Libya's fallen leader Muammar Gaddafi was injured and captured Thursday by fighters of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) in Sirte, a NTC field commander told Xinhua.

The commander, Momhemed Buras Ali Al-Maknee, said a group of fighters from the western Libyan city of Misrata captured Gaddafi in Sirte, who was severely injured.

Gaddafi has been taken away by a military helicopter to an unknown place, he said.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs," NTC official Abdel Majid told Reuters news agency.

The official also added the captured former ruler was hit in head and died.

Libyan television also reported that Gaddafi has been seized, but the report has not yet been officially confirmed by the NTC.

Many were waiting for photographs as proof of Gadhafi's capture or death.

The former Libyan leader was overthrown in August after 42 years in power.
