At least six people died and some others were missing on Friday in Genoa of northern Italy, after rivers burst their banks during heavy rainfall, local media reported.

Hundreds of houses and shops were flooded in Genoa, a coastal city in northern Italy.

Motorways and railways in the area were closed, and the authorities said major roads and schools would remain closed on Saturday.

The civil protection agency urged residents to move to high ground as water rose and fire-fighters used rubber dinghies and divers to evacuate people.

Floods swept away some roads and bridges, while several small towns in Liguria region, whose capital is Genoa, remained cut off from the outside world.
