Russia and Italy started on Monday a joint exercise in the Ionian Sea to practice joint counter- terrorism and anti-piracy operations.

Russia's Black Sea Fleet sent the Smetlivy patrol ship and the Epron rescue boat to participate the Ionex-2011 drill, while the Italian side sent Espero and Aviere frigates, according to Russian media.

The Smetlivy patrol ship also carried a marine unit to ensure the ship's safety during the voyaga to foreign ports, said RIA Novosti news agency.

The Ionex joint drills in the Mediterranean are held on a regular basis to enhance interoperability between Russian and Italian navies.
