60 militants killed in east Afghanistan

Over 60 militants were killed when Afghan and NATO-led forces repelled militants attack on outposts in eastern Afghan province of Paktika on Tuesday night, spokesman for provincial administration said Wednesday.

"An unknown number of armed militants attacked joint Afghan and NATO-led forces' outposts late on Tuesday night in Mammadagha area in Barmal district but joint forces repelled the attack," Mukhlish Afghan told Xinhua.

He said the joint forces also called in air support, as a result over 60 militants were killed in the fighting and airstrike.

Barmal is a remote district in Paktika province near the border of Pakistan.

Taliban insurgents, whose regime was toppled in a U.S.-led incursion in late 2001, has yet to make comment.

The insurgent group launched in May this year spring offensive against Afghan and over 130,000 NATO-led forces.
