Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (R) proposes on November 24 that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (L) shall run for president in 2012. |
Russia's Federal Council, or the upper house of the parliament, said on Friday that the 2012 presidential election was scheduled for March 4, according to local media reports.
Members of the Federal Council unanimously approved a resolution that sets the date for the presidential vote.
The resolution was expected to come into force late Friday and be published in the evening edition of the official Parlamentskaya Gazeta daily newspaper, which were seen as the formally starting of the presidential campaigns.
Under the Russian law, the presidential vote should be launched on the second Sunday in March, when the previous 2008 poll took place. But the mandated date in 2012 will be a working day in Russia, so the election day was brought forward to the first Sunday, which is March 4.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced in September that he would run for president in 2012 and incumbent President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to head the ruling United Russia's list for the Dec. 4 parliamentary elections.
The United Russia party was scheduled to officially nominate Putin as its candidate for presidency on Nov. 27.
