Vice-Premier Li Keqiang has expressed hope that the non-governmental sectors in China and Japan will expand exchanges and cooperation, in order to boost the healthy and stable growth of bilateral ties.

Li made the remarks while meeting Vice-President Ikeda Hiromasa of Japan's major lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai in Beijing on Wednesday.

"The foundation of China-Japan friendship lies in non-governmental sectors," Li said.

Regarding people-to-people exchanges as a unique feature of China-Japan relations, Li urged non-governmental sectors in both countries to carry out more programs for youth exchanges and cooperation, in a bid to cement understanding between the two peoples and beef up bilateral ties.

The vice-premier called on both sides to take the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties this year to enhance dialogue, exchanges and cooperation in various areas, and to boost the healthy and stable development of bilateral strategic ties with mutual benefits.

In response, Hiromasa said he is committed to boosting Japan-China people-to-people exchanges that will contribute to bilateral friendship.

Soka Gakkai is a lay Buddhist association with 10 million members in Japan. The organization has been involved in frequent educational and cultural exchanges with China over the past years.
