Yemeni parliament on Saturday passed an amended law granting outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh complete immunity from prosecution as part of a UN-backed Gulf initiative for power transfer in Yemen.
The law also granted everyone working with the president immunity in political cases, excluding the private cases.
The lawmakers then agreed to nominate Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as the consensus candidate of the ruling party and the opposition for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled on Feb. 21, in accordance with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative.
In return for his resignation, Saleh's immunity law was stipulated by the GCC initiative signed by the president and the opposition in Saudi Arabia on Nov. 23, 2011.
