A South Korean government official said the fishermen were violently resisting routine check, and some "even attempted to snatch the police pistols, causing two officers injured."

Boat captain Wang Xiaofu refuted the charge, saying it was the Korean police who forced the ship crew to stage the violent scene.

Wang said the police started beating all his men with batons as soon as they boarded the vessel, leaving all the people injured and the captain himself hospitalized in Jeju.

He added the police also destroyed the ships radio communication equipment.
