A government soldier was killed after government troops clashed with leftist rebels in southern Philippines early Sunday, the military said.

Elements of the government army's 26th Infantry Battalion were conducting a pursuit operation against a band of New People's Army (NPA) rebels when the clash erupted around 5:30 a.m. in Magkalape village, Sibagat town of Agusan del Sur province, said Col. Leopoldo Galon, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command.

"We were able to recover two firearms, an M-14 and an AK-47 rifle, but unfortunately one of our soldiers was killed," Galon said.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. The Philippine military estimates over 4,000 NPA guerrilla fighters are scattered in more than 60 provinces throughout the country
