At least 10 people were killed Saturday when a boat overloaded with about 60 Dominican migrants capsized off the country's eastern coast, a local official said.
The wooden boat was sailing toward the U.S. island territory of Puerto Rico when it was swamped by heavy waves, a fire chief in eastern Dominican Republic Jeffrey Pimentel said.
At least nine people had been rescued, 10 bodies discovered, while the others still remained missing, he said.
The Dominican navy has launched a search and rescue operation to save more lives.
Many Dominican migrants, often in rickety wooden boats, have attempted to reach Puerto Rico for anticipated better life.
