The death toll from a strong earthquake that jolted central Philippine province of Negros Oriental on Monday rose to 44, a military official said.

In a text message sent to reporters, Col. Francisco Patrimonio, commander of the Army's 302nd Infantry Brigade, said 29 people in Planas village and ten residents in Guihulngan City died due to the landslide triggered by the magnitude 6.7 quake at noon.

Other fatalities include two in Tayasan town, two in Bindoy and one in Jimalalud.

Patrimonio said the earthquake damaged Matilo bridge in La Libertad town and Ayungon bridge and Dayoyo bridge in Jimalalud.

"Looting is now rampant in the Guihulngan City," he said, adding he ordered soldiers to help police maintain peace and order in the city.
