'UN stands ready to provide assistance' to Philippines

A UN spokesperson on Monday said that the UN "stands ready to provide assistance" to the Philippines in the aftermath of a magnitude 6.9 earthquake.
"The government has not requested international assistance so far, but as always, the United Nations stands ready to provide assistance if needed and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) continues to monitor developments," Martin Nesirky, the UN spokesperson, said at a daily press briefing.
According to the government of the Philippines, "seven people have been killed but that there are fears that this number could rise," said Nesirky.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( Phivolcs) has put the earthquake at magnitude 6.9 which happened shortly before noon Monday. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has put the earthquake's magnitude at 6.7.
Several aftershocks with the strongest of magnitude 6.2 occurred after the strong tremor, which was felt in many provinces of the country, the report said.
