In his speech marking the building's inauguration, Mr Krishna commented that the new embassy building symbolizes a new era in relations between India and China.

He stated his belief that the embassy's new facilities would ensure its ability to be both more productive and offer a higher standard of service.

He also stressed the embassy's role in strengthening bilateral ties between China and India. "A modern and expansive chancery clearly reflects our expectations of ties with China," he said.

Mr Krishna hailed India's age-old ties with China in fields such as trade and culture, and he also saluted cooperation between the two countries on global issues such as climate change, food security and a more equitable world order.

In addition, he emphasized that the priority for both China and India is to improve the quality of life for their people as each has a population of more than a billion. Mr Krishna stressed that a strong economic relationship is of vital importance to both countries.

"Both of us are much better off with a stronger bilateral relationship that captures the vast opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefit," he said.

Mr Krishna also mentioned that he and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had agreed that the two countries would celebrate 2012 as the Year of India-China Friendship and Cooperation.

Following the opening ceremony, Chinese and Indian artists gave a lively performance featuring Indian dance and music.
