Two explosions struck Pattani and Narathiwat provinces in the deep south of Thailand Thursday morning, killing one and injuring more than 10 including local people and troops, local media Thairath reported.
In the southernmost province of Pattani, a car bomb went off in front of Provincial Public Health Office in the city Thursday morning, killing one immediately while wounding more than 10 others and destroying over 10 cars and motorcycles nearby.
The Fourth Army Region Chief Lt-Gen Udomchai Thammasarotrat revealed that the explosion took place at about 8:00 am in Muang district of Pattani.
Based on the initial investigation, the suspected car was a pick-up truck which the residents in the area said it had been parked at the site for two days before the incident, according to Lt-Gen Udomchai.
Following the blast, the authorities sealed off the bombsite for further investigation while all injured were already admitted to the city's hospital.
Meanwhile, two soldiers of teacher protection unit were seriously wounded in another road side bomb in Bacho district of Narathiwat while they were on foot patrol, local media INN reported.
After the bomb, the attackers also opened fire at the troops.
The four southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Yala are the only majority Muslim provinces in predominantly Buddhist Thailand. The region has seen escalating violence since January 2004 that has already claimed more than 5,200 lives.
