An empty passenger plane skidded off a runway at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta on Tuesday, sustaining significant damage.

According to a Delta Air Lines statement, two mechanics testing the engines of the Boeing 737-700 early Tuesday morning "experienced a problem with the plane's braking system at approximately 5 a.m.."

The company said the aircraft "sustained damage" and "there were no injuries and no passengers on board."

The plane came to a halt on its belly and right wing just off a taxiway. Fox TV Atlanta quoted officials as saying that the plane sustained significant damage.

Local CBS news quoted Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen as saying that there did not appear to be any delays at this point because of the accident but that could change once they began moving the aircraft.
