A military spokesman of South Sudan said on Thursday the Sudanese army launched an airstrike on Bentiu town, capital of the oil-producing Unity State bordering Sudan, killing one and wounding four others.

Phillip Aguer told Xinhua via phone that "Sudanese warplanes launched airstrikes on the city of Bentiu, the capital of Unity State, and the bombs fell at an area seven kilometers away from the center of the city."

"The aim of the raid was to destroy a bridge linking the cities of Bentiue and Rubkona," he noted.

The Sudanese government has announced that it will respond by " using all legal means" to an attack by the southern army on a strategic area of Heglig in South Kordofan.

Sudan's Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday a decision of the parliament to stop negotiating with South Sudan following the Monday attack on Heglig.

The Sudanese army Tuesday accused the South Sudanese army of carrying out a "brutal assault" on Heglig, which is the largest oil fields in Sudan.

The region witnessed military clashes between troops from the two neighboring countries last month. Heglig locates on the Sudanese side of the border, and produces about half of Sudan's production of crude oil of 115,000 barrels per day.
