U.S. Navy confirmed an amphibious assault ship collided with a Navy oiler Wednesday about 193 kilometers off the Southern California coast as the former was on its way to San Diego in the U.S. state of California.
No one was hurt and no fuel was spilled, the Navy was quoted by local media as saying.
The USS Essex, the amphibious assault ship, collided with the USNS Yukon around 9:20 a.m. local time (1620 GMT), and both vessels were damaged, the Navy said.
The USS Essex was based in San Diego before it was sent to Japan. According to the Navy's website, the ship is returning to San Diego Thursday after completing 12 years as the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed amphibious assault ship in Sasebo, Japan.
