U.S. President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies raised more than 60 million U.S. dollars for his reelection bid in May, the best monthly total this year, his campaign team announced Thursday.

"The campaign raised more than 60 million U.S. across committees in May. Thanks to everyone who chipped in," Obama's campaign team tweeted through his account.

Obama's campaign said more than 572,000 people had donated in May, bringing the total to 2.2 million donors for his reelection bid.

Small donors with less than 250 U.S. dollars accounted for 98 percent of total donations, with the average donation of about 55 U.S. dollars, said the Obama campaign.

May was a strong fund-raising month for Obama, with several Hollywood celebrities' events highlighted on the trail. The Obama campaign brought in nearly 15 million dollars on May 10, a record high in a single fundraiser hosted by actor George Clooney in California.

The Obama campaign hauled in 127 million U.S. dollars in the first quarter of this year with the Democratic National Committee, surging from 68 million dollars raised during the fourth quarter last year. The campaign has further quickened its fund-raising pace since races between Obama and Republican presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney geared up to the general election virtually, bringing in 53 million U.S. dollars in March and 43.6 million U.S. dollars in April.

Obama wrapped up another fund-raising blitz in San Francisco and Los Angeles this week, which was expected to contribute a great deal to the fund-raising haul in June.

Romney campaign has not yet released fund-raising numbers for May. The campaign has been trying to keep pace with Obama, reporting the haul of 40 million U.S. dollars in April.
