Merkel arrives in Beijing for official visit

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Thursday morning.

Wen and Merkel will co-chair the second round of Chinese-German intergovernmental consultations after the talks.

Besides Beijing, Wen will accompany Merkel to visit Tianjin, a municipality some 120 km away from Beijing.

Merkel, who arrived in Beijing on Thursday morning for a two-day official visit, is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang Thursday afternoon.

It is Merkel's sixth visit to China since she took office in 2005.
