India's state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture with Russia's defense export companies in order to produce the ammunition in India.

"Russia is to manufacture five versions of Smerch rockets based on the technology received from Russia," said an Indian Defense Ministry release, "The Smerch rockets are technologically superior, with a range of 70-80 kilometers. With the formation of this joint venture, a new chapter in the Indo-Russian friendship begins."

The Smerch project, worth $500 million, is being built in central India.

The OFB can greatly improve its capacity to produce an advanced rocket system by localizing the technology of Smerch rockets.
