Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Wednesday evening strongly condemned the violent deeds of attacking the U.S. consulate in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi. U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens is confirmed to have died in the attack.

U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens is confirmed to have died in Tuesday's conflict in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, the pan-Arab Al Jazeera TV reported Wednesday.

"We are shocked at attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that caused the death and injury of a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. And we strongly condemn the violent deeds," a press release quoted Hong as saying.

China believes the reigning regime of Libya bears the responsibility and obligation to adopt all necessary measures to protect the life and property integrity of foreign institutions and their staff stationed in the country according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

An armed mob protesting over a film they said offended Islam, attacked the US consulate and set fire to the building. Stevens was killed along with three U.S. embassy staff as they rushed away from the consulate building.

Their bodies will be transferred to Tripoli, the Libyan capital, sources told Xinhua in Libya.
