Turkish military fired back into Syria Friday after two shells launched from Syria landed in Turkish territory, Turkish state broadcaster TRT reported, without specifying where the incident occurred.

Turkey has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes against Syrian forces in border regions since a Syrian shelling killed five Turks in the border town of Akcakale in Turkish southeastern Sanliurfa province earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Armed Forces performed a military drill Thursday in a border area close to the Syrian town of Kobani, local newspaper Today's Zaman reported Friday.

Tanks and armored military vehicles from the Mursitpinar military unit in Sanliurfa's Suruc town participated in drill, which showed the military's preparedness to respond to any threat against the country, the report said.

The Turkish Armed Forces' Chief of General Staff Necdet Ozel told reporters last week during his visit to Akcakale that Turkey warned of stronger retaliation if Syria continues shelling on Turkish soil.
