Six children were injured, two of them critically wounded on Monday after a can of gasoline next to a fire pit exploded in a backyard in the U.S. state of Texas, authorities said.
The children, ages 4 to 11, were airlifted to local hospitals after the incident in McKinney, about 50 km north of Dallas, local fire department spokeswoman Stacie Durham told reporters.
At least one of the children sprinkled gasoline from a can onto the fire and left the can near the pit, Durham said. Fumes from the can was ignited and all six children who were nearby were hit by the explosion's flames, she said.
The children, who are related, were believed to have been left unsupervised in the back yard, where a fire was burning. Adults were inside the home at the time of the explosion.
