At least 82 people were killed and 160 others injured when two blasts rocked a university in Syria's northern city of Aleppo on Tuesday, local media said.

Activists and witnesses said the two blasts were caused by bombs dropped from government fighter planes. However, the government blamed "terrorists," who they said had fired missiles at the campus. [Photo: Agencies]

The two blasts rocked the faculty of Information Engineering in the University of Aleppo, the reports said, adding that they were very big and caused many casualties.

The blasts were caused by two missiles fired from an area close to al-Layramoun roundabout by some gunmen, who were trying to bring down a war jet flying overhead, the reports said.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city, has emerged as the main focal point of deadly violence in Syria's 22-month-old crisis.

The armed rebels there have been pushing for territorial gains to control the city in the hope of establishing their de facto capital in that crucial slice of Syria.
