The southern German state of Bavaria has also found horsemeat in lasagna, officials said late Friday.

The state government has already strengthened food control after German federal government announced Wednesday that Germany was also hit by the widening horsemeat scandal, according to state officials.

Andreas Zapf, president of Bavarian state office for health and food safety, said that checks will be conducted not only on burgers and frozen lasagna, but also on other cooked dishes with meat.

The supermarket chain Real announced on Wednesday that it had discovered horsemeat in falsely-labeled frozen lasagna and it had removed the product from shelves for precaution since Friday.

The scandal came up to the surface in mid-January when Irish food inspectors detected horsemeat in frozen beef burgers made by firms in Ireland and Britain.

So far, companies and slaughterhouses in a number of European countries have been dragged into the scandal, including France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Norway, media reports said.
