South African police have replaced the lead detective in the Oscar Pistorius murder case.

The officer in question is facing attempted murder charges himself.

Police commissioner Riah Phiyega.

"I have decided to assign this very important matter, this very important investigation under the leadership and stewardship of the Divisional Commissioner of Detectives Services, Lieutenant General Vinesh Moonoo. He's the most senior detective in the subs environment."

Hilton Botha, the ousted lead investigator, testified in Pistorius's bail hearing that Pistorius knew he was firing at his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp the night she was killed in his house.

Botha and two other police officers have had seven counts of attempted murder reinstated against them connected to a 2011 shooting.

The officers are accused of firing shots at a minibus they were trying to stop.

Pistorius' bail hearing is due to continue later on this Friday.
