At least seven workers at one of Mexico's leading breweries died early Sunday after accidentally inhaling toxic fumes, a company representative said.

In a press release, Grupo Modelo brewery Operations Manager Francisco Javier Lopez Bravo said the workers apparently died while cleaning a cistern located next to a gas tank at one of its plants in the capital Mexico City.

Two of the seven victims were found at the site, he said, offering no information on the other five.

Lopez said there was no risk of danger to area residents or to the operations of the plant in the northwest of the city, adding Modelo is deeply sorry for this incident and will support the affected families permanently.

Indications are the accident occurred due to an accumulation of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, said Lopez, but added officials had to wait for the investigation to be completed before making a definitive announcement.

City civil protection personnel went to the site to inspect the brewery.
