Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Japan to check both the Potsdam Proclamation as well as the Cairo Declaration again.

Wang's remarks came after one top Japanese official accused Chinese Premier Li Keqiang of ignoring history.

"We demand Japan clarifies the remarks. What the official said is lacking in common sense and unreasonable," said Wang.

"We urge them to check the Potsdam Proclamation and the Cairo Declaration again and stop saying things like this."

Li was on an official visit to Germany from May 25 to May 27. When visiting the Cecilienhof Palace in Potsdam on Sunday, Li said that in accordance with the Potsdam Proclamation, all territories that Japan had taken from China during World War II, such as northeast China, Taiwan and related islands, shall be restored to China.

Background

Potsdam Proclamation

The Potsdam Proclamation is a statement calling for the surrender of the Empire of Japan during World War II. Clause Eight of the Proclamation reads that "the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine."

Cairo Declaration

The Cairo Declaration resulted from the Cairo Conference in Cairo, Egypt, on November 27, 1943.

The Declaration states that all territories Japan has taken from China, including Manchuria (Dongbei), Formosa (Taiwan) and the Pescadores (Penghu), shall be restored to China.
