Six civilians lost their lives as a roadside bomb went off in the southern Afghan province of Helmand on Tuesday, spokesman for provincial administration Omar Zawak said.

"A mine planted by Taliban militants in Sangin district went off at around noon today killing six civilians including three women and three men," Zawak told Xinhua.

Without providing more details, he added that investigation has been initiated into the case.

Sangin, a former Taliban stronghold, has been the scene of heavy fighting for the past two weeks during which more than 70 Taliban fighters were killed.
