The evacuation of crash-landed Asiana flight 214 was delayed because the pilots initially told flight attendants not to order passengers to evacuate, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairman Deborah Hersman said in a press conference on Wednesday.

The evacuation began 90 seconds after the Boeing 777 skidded to a stop - only after a flight attendant spotted fire outside the wreck.

"It seems a little unusual that the crew would not announce an order to evacuate after a plane crash," Hersman said.

The crash killed two Chinese girls and injured about 180.

Asiana Airlines Inc said the pilot in charge of landing the Boeing 777 that crash-landed at San Francisco's airport on Saturday was training for the long-range plane and that it was his first flight to the airport with the jet.

Pilots involved in the crash have been questioned about what happened in the final seconds of the plane's approach.
