Authorities said green paint was discovered around 1:30 a.m. Friday on the white marble statue and on the floor area around the statue. No words, letters or symbols were found other than paint.
The Park Police is reviewing surveillance footage from the popular tourist attraction, but so far has released no information about who may have been responsible or the motivation for it. No damage was reported at nearby memorials and monuments.
After the vandalism was found, the memorial was closed, and the National Park Service is working to clean up the paint. The memorial may be opened later in the day.
