Dozens of African migrants died of thirst after their vehicles broke down while attempting to crosss the Sahara Desert to reach Algeria, Xinhua learned from the Arlit security forces.

So far 90 bodies have been found by security staff. Nearly 50 of the dead were children and 30 were women.

Arlit police said on October 28 that 40 migrants died of thirst due to vehicle breakdown in the desert, most of them were Nigerians.

The police said such tragedy often occurs as African migrants try to cross the large streches of desert along the borders of Algeria, Libya and Niger, the only path for those living to the south of Sahara Desert to reach Europe.
