Over 5,000 people were killed and more than one thousand missing after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, with 13 million people were affected. Many countries and organizations are offering a helping hand.

A team from China's Red Cross has reached Tacloban, where over 400 people were still missing. They're now coordinating with Philippine rescue workers on how best to distribute medical supplies and from China's military a specially equipped ship is heading to the most devastated regions.

It’s called the "Peace Ark", and it’s the world’s only 10,000 ton ship built only for medical services.

On board are 300 hospital beds and eight operating theatres. On Friday, it entered the South China Sea where it battled high winds and tides....many were sea sick.

Sun Tao, Head of "Peace Ark" Ship Hospital, said, "Winds and tides are very strong...we hope we can serve the Philippine people as soon as possible... we did some training and just now we did a drill. "

Their training included adjusting medical equipment and categorizing over 14 hundred kinds of medicines.

"We made some detailed plans according to the status of the disaster areas, and got suitable equipment and medicines ready. And we trained our staff with knowledge about common secondary diseases," Sun said.

The "Peace Ark" is a warship belonging to the military, but its work is humanitarian.

It’s been on international medical missions since 2010, visiting countries in Africa, Latin America and South Asia. Providing all sorts of medical help, inlcuding traditional Chinese medicine...which has been especially popular..

This time the peace ark set sail from East China’s Qingdao on Thursday, carrying also tents, mobile kitchens, commuter boats and helicopters. And it’ll be reaching its destination soon.
