Russia carried out a successful test-launch of an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Tuesday, a military official said.

The Russian Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) unit conducted the test at 11:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) from the Plesetsk space center in northwestern Russia, RVSN spokesman Igor Yegorov told reporters.

He said the RS-24 Yars was equipped with a multiple warhead and the missile successfully hit the target.

This ICBM will form the core of Russian strategic ground-based missile forces, the official said.

There would be 15 more ICBM put into service by the end of this year, the RVSN announced last Tuesday.

In 2014, two more divisions would be armed with RS-24 Yars and 16 launches of the ICBMs would be conducted with various training, testing and commercial tasks, RVSN said.

Russia possesses about 400 ICBM launchers. E
