On July 3, Egypt’s armed forces ousted the country’s first elected president, Mohamed Morsi, and suspended the constitution after mass protests. Following Morsi’s removal, his supporters organized protests and sit-ins, demanding his reinstatement and denouncing what they described as a “military coup.” During an operation to disperse two major pro-Morsi sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in Cairo and Nahda Square in Giza on Aug. 14, 638 people were killed and 3,994 others injured in clashes with security troops.
