India Monday successfully testfired its long-range, nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni IV missile from a military base off the coast of the eastern state of Odisha, sources said.

"The testfiring of the 4,000-km range missile was successful. It was launched from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast at 11:52 a.m. (local time) and it traveled its full striking range," they said.

The lighter missile, with two stages of solid propulsion and a payload with re-entry heat shield, has many cutting-edge technologies adhering to global standards.

This was the third development trial of the Agni IV missile by the state-owned Defense Research and Development Organization, the last being carried out in September 2012 successfully.
