The former Rwandan army Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant general Charles Kayonga has been appointed as the ambassador to China, an official source revealed Tuesday in Kigali.

The state-run Radio Rwanda quoted a presidential decree that was approved during a cabinet meeting saying that the senior military officer perceived as close to Rwandan president Paul Kagame, will reside in Beijing.

Lieutenant general Kayonga was among the senior officers of the then rebel group, Rwanda Patriotic Front, that took control of the power in July 1994 after overthrowing the former government.

Francois Ngarambe, former Rwandan ambassador to China has been transferred to Switzerland.

Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo has made several changes of ambassadors since she was appointed the position in late 2009.
