Former British Prime Minister and Special Envoy for the Middle East Quartet Tony Blair arrived in Oslo on Wednesday for talks with Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende on the stagnant Middle East peace process.

"It will be a disaster if the negotiations between Israel and Palestine collapse," said Blair upon arrival.

Blair was scheduled to discuss on Wednesday night with Brende on what can be done to inject momentum into the peace process.

Peace talks in the Middle East are under threat of collapse. The Palestinians have once again turned to the United Nations for being recognized as an independent state while Israel has refused to release a number of Palestinian prisoners.

Blair, who has been Middle East Special Envoy for seven years, has been trying hard to make the negotiations conclude with a two-state solution.

"There is no alternative to negotiations," said Blair.

Norway, which supports the establishment of a Palestinian state based on a negotiated agreement between Israel and representatives for the Palestinians, has been playing an important role in external support to the Palestine through the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee, local development forum and the Joint Liaison Committee.

Norway has been providing financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority ever since the Oslo Agreement was signed in 1993.
