One soldier of the NATO-led coalition forces was killed following a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan, the coalition forces confirmed on Thursday.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died as a result of a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan Wednesday," the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic event," the statement said without providing details on the incident.

The brief statement did not reveal the identity of the dead, only saying "it is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities."

On April 26 five British soldiers of the coalition were killed in similar incident in the same region while three people were killed in an aircraft mishap in eastern Afghanistan on Jan. 10 this year.

More than 52,000 NATO-ISAF forces, including 33,000 Americans, are presently stationed in Afghanistan. The death has brought to 33 the number of foreign soldiers have been killed in the war-torn country since Jan. 1.
