Afghan army kills 33 militants during operations

About 33 militants have been killed and 20 others wounded in Afghan army's operations carried out in the country since early Wednesday, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"Afghan National Army (ANA) launched several cleanup operations in Ghor, Badakhshan, Nimroz and Kunduz provinces within the past 24 hours, killing 33 armed opponents, injuring 20 and detaining five other suspects," the ministry said in a statement.

Three ANA personnel were killed in separate roadside bomb explosions over the same period, the statement noted.

The army specialists defused 71 roadside bombs and landmines, according to the statement.

Taliban insurgent group has yet to make comments.

Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Security forces have pressed on to clear the militants in restive provinces.

Taliban has responded by bombing and armed attacks.

Earlier in the day, one civilian and one policeman were killed and four others wounded in two bomb attacks in Afghan capital of Kabul and northern Balkh province.
