The UN Security Council on Sunday welcomed the conclusion of the presidential election process in Afghanistan as well as an agreement on the formation of a national unity government.

The council members looked forward to working with the new government, and to further strengthening Afghanistan's electoral system and democratic processes, said a press statement.

The 15-nation body called on the new government to effectively address the issues facing the country, including security, good governance, economic recovery, among others.

On Sunday, Pakistan welcomed the signing of the power-sharing agreement between Abdullah and Ghani.

"The government and the people of Pakistan welcome the agreement signed by the two presidential candidates in Afghanistan regarding the establishment of a government of national unity," Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Consistent with our support for a peaceful democratic transition, we regard the signing of this agreement as a positive development," said the statement.

On the same day, U.S. President Barack Obama pledged to support the new Afghan government.

"The president reaffirmed the United States' strategic partnership with Afghanistan and commitment to continue its support to the new Afghan government," the White House said in a statement.

The European Union on Sunday hailed as well the new developments in Afghanistan.

"We welcome the political agreement reached between Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai to form a government of national unity," the European External Action Service said in a statement.

"We look forward to cooperating closely with the new Afghan government to implement urgently the reforms needed on a path toward prosperity and peace," said the statement.
