At least 17 people were killed and 60 others wounded in three bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Monday evening, a police source said.

A suicide bomber blew himself up near a police checkpoint in Kadhimiyah district in northern Baghdad, leaving at least nine people killed and 30 others injured, the police said.

Meanwhile, six people were killed and 24 others wounded when a road bomb exploded at a popular market in Sadr City district in eastern Baghdad, the source said, adding that the huge blast also destroyed several shops nearby.

In a separate incident, an explosive-laden car blew up in front of an auto store in Habibiya district in eastern Baghdad, leaving two people killed and six others injured.

Iraq is witnessing some of its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, the terrorism and violence have killed 5,576 and wounded more than 11,666 civilians in Iraq in the first half of 2014.
