About 28 Taliban militants were killed and 47 others injured during Afghan security forces' cleanup operations in different provinces within the last 24 hours, said the Interior Ministry on Wednesday.

"The raids were conducted by the Afghan police, army and the National Directorate of Security or intelligence agency personnel in Zabul, Kandahar, Laghman, Kunduz, Uruzgan, Balkh, Nangarhar, Khost and Paktia provinces. Four militants were also detained in the above operations," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates.

The security forces also recovered and defused 23 landmines recently planted by the militants during the raids, according to the statement, which did not disclose if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

Separately, the security forces defused 21 roadside bombs and landmines in Herat, Kandahar, Wardak and Faryab province over the same period, the statement added.

In a special operation, a local Taliban leader named Sheikh Allawodin was killed in northern Badakhshan province on Tuesday, deputy provincial police chief Abdul Qadir Sayyad told Xinhua.

The killed leader had served as Taliban shadow district governor in Argo district of the province, he added.

The Taliban, which has been waging an insurgency since its regime was toppled by a U.S-led invasion in late 2001, has yet to make comments.
