The Council of the European Union (EU) on Monday discussed additional sanctions targeting militants in eastern Ukraine.

No further sanctions were announced against Russia. The EU said in a statement that they will continue to closely follow the situation in Ukraine and act accordingly.

Tension has escalated since Ukrainian authorities decided to repeal a law granting a special status to Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which raised fears that an ongoing prisoners-of-war swap may be disrupted.

The EU called on all parties to follow the Minsk agreements, underlining the need to intensify talks in the framework of the Trilateral Contact Group.

The Ukrainian government and the militants leadership inked a ceasefire deal on Sept. 5 in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk, aiming at de-escalating tensions and facilitating the release of hundreds of prisoners-of-war.

The Minsk agreement was signed by representatives of Ukraine, Russia, and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) framework.
