The Libyan government said on Wednesday that the national army has started to gather around Tripoli, preparing to retake the city currently controlled by the Islamist militant.

"The government informs Libyans and foreign residents in Tripoli and its surrounding areas that these forces are moving toward Tripoli. They are at the outskirts of the city, aiming to liberate it from the Islamist armed groups. They will use force against anyone who resists their entry into Tripoli and endangers the lives of civilians and public property," a government statement said.

The government also called on the armed groups to abandon their weapons and do not resist. The statement also called on citizen to rise up against the Islamist armed coalition Libya Dawn.

The Islamist militants of Libya Dawn have been controlling the capital Tripoli as well as large western areas of the country since August.

Since mid-November, Libya's national army has launched new rounds of assaults on areas controlled by Libya Dawn. Several air strikes have hit cities, including Tripoli, Zuwarah, Zawiya, Sorman and Gharyan. Fierce fighting still flares in Benghazi.
