Opposition Alliance Lepep led by Sir Anerood Jugnauth in Mauritius won 47 of the 60 direct seats available in the country's Parliament, an official announced Thursday.

The results were officially announced by respective returning officers of the Electoral Commission of Mauritius in all constituencies.

The government coalition led by two former Prime ministers of the island, namely Dr Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Berenger managed to claim only 13 seats.

Local political observers said it was going to be a tight battle for the 10th parliamentary election in Mauritius since its independence. But results proclaimed Thursday proved them all wrong.

Outgoing Prime Minister Ramgoolam failed to be elected in his own constituency for the first time since 1991.
