Taliban commander killed in S. Afghanistan

A key Taliban commander, Mullah Momen, along with 10 others including two police, were killed in the southern Helmand province on Sunday, a local official said.

"Acting upon intelligence report, units of police backed by personnel of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) launched operations on the Helmand-Kandahar highway, killing Taliban important commander Mullah Momen along with eight of his men on Sunday," Deputy Governor of Helmand Ahmad Massoud Bakhtawar told Xinhua.

Two police were also killed during the operations which lasted for a while, he said.Mullah Momen, according to the official, organized attacks on security personnel along the Helmand-Kandahar highway and his death could be a major setback to the insurgents in Helmand and adjoining provinces.

Taliban militants who have intensified activities over the past months have yet to make comment.
