Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday appointed former parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchynov as the country's new security chief.
According to the decree published on the presidential website, Turchynov has assumed the position of the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), which supervises the Defense Ministry and the armed forces.
Turchynov, 50, a diplomat and economic sciences professor, served as the head of the Security Service of Ukraine in 2005 and the deputy head of the NSDC in 2007.
In late February Turchynov was elected as the country's parliament speaker and assumed the duties of the acting president after the lawmakers have ousted former leader Viktor Yanukovitch from his post.
The former secretary of the NSDC Andriy Parubiy resigned in early August, without revealing the motivation for the move.
