The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) on Tuesday condemned the attacks by Boko Haram, leading to the death of many citizens while seriously injuring others and damaging properties in the northeast region of Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

The West African bloc said it will continue to monitor, with grave concern, the activities of the terror group, noting the president of the ECOWAS Commission is particularly saddened by the recent attack and destruction carried out by Boko Haram in Baga Town where over 2,000 people were reported dead.

Nigeria's military authorities, however, denied the casualties figure in a statement earlier issued, saying only 150 people were killed in the onslaught on Jan. 3.

"While strongly condemning these despicable acts and wanton disregard for human life and property, the president, on behalf of the ECOWAS Community, extends solidarity and heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and sincere condolences to the bereaved families," a statement by ECOWAS said.

The regional bloc reiterated its commitment to work with the government of Nigeria, member states and all stakeholders to halt the incessant attacks that continue to pose great threats to the peace, security and stability of the region, adding it would welcome efforts by the African Union, the Lake Chad Basin Commission and others in this regard.

Boko Haram, which has proved to be a major security threat in Nigeria, seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law in the West African country. Endi
